On Wednesday it was reported that the Oakland Raiders and Derek Carr were close to finalizing a contract extension to make him the highest paid player in the league.

Carr took to Twitter himself though to let everyone know that it was not done yet though, but it still seemed like just a matter of time before it did as Carr himself has said that he would like to be a Raider for life.

One day later, it appears the deal is now done, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting that Carr did in fact sign the record-breaking five-year, $125 million extension:

Carr once again took to Twitter to confirm the news, saying that he is one step closer to his dream:

As previously mentioned, The $25 million per season is the richest annual contract in NFL history, passing Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s deal that pays him $24.6 million per season.

Carr was a second round draft pick of the Raiders in 2014 out of Fresno State. He has been named a Pro Bowler in each of the last two seasons, and in 2016 he developed into an MVP candidate leading the Raiders to a 12-4 record and their first playoff appearance in over a decade.

His value to the organization was really proved when he went down with a season-ending injury in Week 16 though, and the Raiders lost their final two games, including a playoff game against the Houston Texans, without him.

With Carr now locked up longterm, next on Raiders general manager’s agenda is signing the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack to what also could be a record-breaking extension.
