On This Date In Raiders History:
December 21, 1974
The Raiders welcomed the Miami Dolphins in a divisional playoff matchup on this date in 1974. The Dolphins were coming off three straight Super Bowl appearances.
Quarterback Ken Stabler had four touchdowns and 293 passing yards to help lead the team to a 28-26 victory over the Dolphins. Stabler had two of his scoring passes in the fourth quarter to put the Raiders on top. Fred Biletnikoff led the receivers with eight catches for 122 yards and a touchdown, while Cliff Branch had three catches for 84 yards and a score. Stabler found Charlie H. Smith and Clarence Davis for his other two touchdowns. Davis also added 59 yards on the ground in the offensive effort.
On defense, Phil Villapiano had an interception and a pair of Raiders had a sack to hold the Dolphins enough for the win. Horace Jones and Otis Sistrunk each brought down Dolphins’ quarterback Bob Griese. Kicker George Blanda did not kick any field goals, but was perfect on his four PAT attempts.
That season, the Raiders would fall to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship.
